Short Scientific Course 1

On the 26th and 27th June 2025, the first Short Scientific Course, a 2-day hybrid-seminar organised by the University of Ljubljana, offered theoretical knowledge and secures a common level of knowledge based on different design theories, e.g. Systems Design/Living Systems, Framework Design, Urban Acupuncture and Co-Creation methods. In addition, short lectures on methods of site analysis have been offered in relation to the specific field of knowledge.

Reflection Seminar in Porto

From 5th to 7th November 2025, the entire Landlabs research team met in Porto to discuss the current work of each doctoral candidate with invited experts from six theoretical disciplines. The team also visited the landscape laboratory in Porto and attended the midterm meeting with the EU officer to reflect on the project.

Short Scientific Course 2

From 19 to 20 February 2026, the second Short Scientific Course — a two-day hybrid seminar organised by the Aarhus School of Architecture — introduced the doctoral candidates to the central concept of landscape laboratories in relation to design research. Through lectures by international professors of landscape architecture, various approaches to research through design were presented. The doctoral candidates‘ current work was discussed, as were criteria on sustainability and beauty.

Tour d’Europe

The “Tour d’Europe” was the largest event during the LANDLABS research project from thw 5th-14th June 2026, where the 4 remaining landscape laboratory sites (Tromso, Aarhus, Vienna and Ljubljana) have been visited and investigated. Each site and the Doctoral Candidates’ work have been discussed and reflected by the entire group, enabling a shift from an inside perspective to an outside perspective, and finding the researcher`s blind spots.

Upcoming events

Short Scientific Course 3:

Design research

A 3-day hybrid-seminar organized by UiT:
At the thirst Short Scientific Course, first of all the doctoral candidates present the current state of their work, followed by discussion and feedback by the whole group. During the course, the doctoral candidates will learn how transferable design strategies can be developed from site specific work, e.g. through design guidelines.
Furthermore, the doctoral candidates will learn how to communicate results from transdisciplinary research/research through design to different target groups e.g. civil society, media groups, as well as to the international academic community.

Reflection Seminar 3 in Vienna:

Transferability & Conference preparation

A 3-day workshop organized by TU Wien
At the beginning of the third reflection seminar, the doctoral candidates will present their current work on the evaluation criteria as well as design scenarios and design strategies for their landscape laboratories. The findings and insights will be clustered and discussed in the whole group. In different settings all doctoral candidates and supervisors will discuss the potential of each specific landscape laboratory presentation for developing transferable evaluation criteria as well as transferable design strategies for Anthropocene landscape laboratories.

LANDLABS Conference

At the final LANDLABS conference, all research results will be presented and the conclusion of transferable design strategies for Anthropocene landscape laboratories will be discussed with external scientists and the public.
